~ Tessa ~
âHey Megan,â I say as I approach her desk, swinging my bag over my shoulder.
âHey, Tessa. Are you heading out?â she asks, her fingers typing away at a million miles an hour.
I admire a lot of things about Megan. I especially like how she caters to Ryderâs every professional need without a momentâs hesitation and knows precisely what he wants even more than he knows himself. Whether it is lunch, the thermostat setting, or specific files heâs looking for. Megan is also a master at multitasking, typing documents, talking on the phone, and keeping a clear head through it all, always with a smile on her face. Iâm pretty sure sheâs superhuman.
âIs Mr. Mahoney in?â I ask.
âWhy? You and he have a hot date?â she asks.
I would open my mouth to respond, but Iâm too shocked to do so. Does Megan know about us? I wouldnât be surprised since sheâs highly observant and intelligent. It would be a miracle if she didnât know about us. But instead of freaking out, like I inwardly am, I remain focused and relaxed on the outside, as difficult as it may be.
âIâm kidding,â she says luckily and begins to chuckle. âGod, Tessa. You need to lighten up.â
âYeah, sorry,â I sigh and run my fingers through my hair. âItâs been a long day. I was supposed to drop by his office. He wanted to talk to me about something. But I havenât had the time.â
âOh yeah? He didnât mention anything to me.â
âMaybe it just slipped his mind since heâs so busy with the launch and all that.â
âYeah, maybe,â Megan says, looking at me a little suspiciously. âUnfortunately, heâs not in right now. Heâs out for a long lunch.â
âWith who?â I ask. âI mean, he doesnât normally have lunches away from the office, especially not such long ones.â
Megan narrows her eyes and says, âAre you training for my job, Tessa? Because that is some next-level observance skills right there.â
I shrug my shoulders and try to stay calm. âI guess youâre rubbing off on me.â
âThatâs good to hear unless you really are after my job,â she says.
âI wouldnât dream of it. Besides, youâre superhuman. I could never do what you do.â
âI will graciously accept that compliment. Thank you,â she smiles at me. âAnd if you must know, he didnât tell me who heâs having lunch with.â
âWhat?â I ask. âHe tells you everything.â
âI was as shocked as you are. But I guess heâs allowed to have secrets.â
âI guess. We all have them,â I shrug nonchalantly.
âYou don't think heâs seeing someone, is he?â
I swallow the lump in my throat and ask, âWhy would you think that?â
âWell, heâs been more secretive than usual, with little things, you know. Heâs also asked Oliver to disconnect the cameras on the penthouse floor, and he usually does that when seeing someone. Casually, of course. Ryder hasnât had a long-term girlfriend in a while, so if he is seeing someone, then good for him,â she says.
âIt gets pretty lonely, Iâll admit.â
âHow long has it been for you?â Megan asks.
